By the time I finished recording the message, I already had two texts from Luke.
"only other ppl in detention besides me is 1) stoner 2) nerd 3) a couple on the verge of breaking up over what seems to be a missing talon??? will keep you posted. i know, the suspense is killing me too!"
"missing tampon** stupid autocorrect >("
I couldn't help but chuckle.
The walk home wouldn't take too long, I hoped. It had been a long time since I trekked the way back alone.
In elementary school, Luke and I used to walk home together every day. It was actually how we started getting to know each other.
We walked the same path home and I just ended up saying 'hi' one of those days. In the beginning, we struggled to come up with things to say to each other, and now we're so close, he even carries an extra tampon in his backpack in case I ever need it. When we were younger, Luke wasn't as outrageous and confident as he was now, and I liked to think that my constant teasing was what brought out this side of him.
I passed by the park that I used to take Connor to when he was still pretty young, and realized how different life was now. I had spent so many evenings sitting on the benches while he ran around, either playing soccer with friends or crawling on the jungle gym.
By the time we left the park, Connor would somehow manage to get himself covered from head to toe in dirt and grass stains. And at home, we would find Mom humming in the kitchen while she prepared dinner, somehow always surprised to see how filthy Connor had become. I noticed sadly that she doesn't hum anymore. And then later, Dad would get back from work and wrestle a little with Connor. Then he would--
My stomach turned. I needed to stop thinking about him.
I need to stop thinking about him.
Forcing my thoughts onto more pleasant subjects, I approached the abandoned construction site. It was empty, as usual.
Luke and I used to cut through the old site so we wouldn't have to go all the way around. It had been a new development a few years back, and the plan was to build brand new houses on the enormous empty lot. But they ran out of funding and the project was shut down. Now it was just a neighborhood of unfinished frames.
The frames loomed over me like wooden skeletons, with windowless eyes and gaping mouths where the garages should've been. Even though it was the middle of the day, it felt a little spooky approaching the developments without Luke.
He was probably still trying to figure out the mystery behind the vanishing tampon.
As I began crossing the street to enter the neighborhood, a motorcyclist rudely whizzed by me, so closely that he caused my hair to fly backwards. I glared at the back of the driver's head, which was hidden beneath a silver helmet. He didn't even turn around.
"Asshole," I mumbled, shaking my head in annoyance.
There were "Do Not Enter: Private Property" and "Danger Zone" signs staked at the edge of the construction site, but I walked right by them. Luke and I had passed through here a million times, and we've yet to see one person. But still, I wanted to get through as quickly as possible.
It was dead silent, so I scared myself when I accidentally kicked an old box of nails that was on the ground. The nails flew out in every direction and made loud clinking noises as they scattered across the street

By the time we left the park, Connor would somehow manage to get himself covered from head to toe in dirt and grass stains.
