The number of blades (Z) affect the frequency for thevibrations (but also the vibration strength). Measurementsshow that frequencies equivalent to the propellershafts revolutions (n) are often very strong (this has to ndo with unbalance and that the propeller blades are notexactly alike, so called hydro-dynamic unbalance). Alsowater is thrown against the boat bottom every time ablade passes, i.e. the frequency is equal to the bladefrequency (Z×n) (also double blade frequency 2×Z×n isoften noticeable). For a propeller which is located behind the keel as infig. 24, a three-bladed propeller will give more powerfulbending vibrations to the propeller shaft (and even tothe hull) than a four-bladed propeller. The three-bladedpropeller will pass one blade at a time through thedead zones behind the keel creating a power pulse
