• Maxillary expansionMaxillary skeletal deficiency in the transverse plane of space is characterized by narrow width of the palatal vault, and often accompanies excessive vertical growth. The correction of this problem in preadolescent patients can be accomplished by opening the midpalatal suture, thereby increasing the transverse dimension of the maxilla, widening the roof of the mouth and the floor of the nose. It should be recognized that the midpalatal suture is an important growth site contributing to the normal width of the maxilla, which is active until the late teens. With increasing age, the two halves of the maxilla get tightly interdigitated at this suture, eventually making it difficult to open. The author has been able to obtain significant increments in transverse dimension of the maxilla by midpalatal suture opening upto the age of 16 to 17 years.
