Ann Robinson's Mold Investments
The following was Ann’s student handout at Pilchuck in 1996. Ann has revised it and included additional information. This is the 2006 edition. I have taken the liberty and translated her metric measuremeij into our archaic system of weights and measures.

Directions: All investment material is applied in separate batches; that is, the layers are built up by hand and shaped to the vessel. By shaping the investment to the vessel, you are assured of even annealing througjl the wall of the investment.
For large core vessels & Large Solid Castings
1st layer (should be V2” thick)
1 liter of water 1.057 quarts
1 kilo of plaster 2.2 lbs.
1 kilo of silica 200.0 mesh
Vi kilo of fine grog 1.1 lbs.
*100 gms of shredded paper — 3.5 oz. (can be made in a blender)
**fibreglass, chopped.
Backup layer (as thick as necessary)
1 liter of water
1 kilo of plaster
1 kilo of silica (200 mesh)
V5 kilo fine grog
% kilo course grog
*100 gms. shredded paper **fibreglass, chopped
1.057 quarts of water
2.2 lbs. of plaster
2.2 lbs. of silica
10.5 oz. fine grog 21.1 oz. course grog
3.5 oz. shredded paper
Medium-sized vessels
1 liter water 1 kilo plaster 1 kilo silica 1 kilo fine grog *100 grams chopped paper **fibreglass, chopped
I recommend a high alumina refractory grog of the sort used in refractory cements for furnaces as it has j less expansion and contraction when heated to casting temperatures.
*Paper: I recommend using PB 33 as sold by Eagle Picher (www.eaglepicher.com). It is pure wood:] cellulose. Look for this product on their web site under the main heading of Pre-co-Floc and listed under! filtration. PB-33 has a short fibre length and mixes beautifully with no lumping. It aids in the venting of steam] from within the mould. As you gradually heat up, it burns off from the outside in, leaving minute tunnels) that vents the steam building up within, to the surface. If the steam cannot buildup pressure then it doesn't! put pressure on any small cracks that may have initiated during the steaming out of the wax.
**Fibreglass is W (13mm) chopped. Chopped means just the individual strands of fibreglass. It can be purchased as individual strands or can be created using a chopper gun.
