PART 2 QUESTION-RESPONSE
There are 30 items in this part of the TOEIC® test. Each item consists of a question, or sometimes a statement, followed by three responses. You must listen carefully and choose the most appropriate response.
The purpose is to test how quickly and accurately you can respond to what you hear. There are no photographs to look at or answer choices to read, which makes this a "pure" listening challenge. You have to listen intently to the recording and quickly select the correct response to each question or statement. You will hear each item only once. There is a short pause between each item, but there are no pauses between the responses you hear that follow each question or statement.
QUICK CHECK
How many items are in this part of the TOEIC test? 1 MIN
Does every item start with a question?
How many responses follow each question or statement?
Are the questions or statements repeated?
Is there a pause between the responses to each question or statement?
In what ways is this a "pure" listening challenge?
OVERVIEW
EXAMPLE
You hear: [M-Am] Would you mind helping me finish this report?
You then hear: [F-Cn] (A) That's very kind of you.
(B) I thought you would.
(C) No, not at all. A B
The best response to the question "Would you mind helping me finish this report?" is answer choice (C), "No, not at all." You should mark answer choice (C).
Answer choice (A) assumes the question is an offer, whereas it is a request. Answer choice (B) is an illogical response, repeating would, and using a word that sounds similar to a word in the question {thought sounds similar to report).
REMEMBER On the actual test, you will hear but NOT see each question or statement and the three answer choices.
Challenges
In Part 2, the questions and statements, as well as the answer choices that follow them, are fairly short, and for the most part they use language that you will be familiar with. However, there are a number of reasons why even the most advanced test-takers risk losing points on this part of the test.
► Concentration
It can be hard to keep your focus when listening to 30 items in rapid succession, especially toward the end. Maintaining focus is possibly the most difficult challenge that test-takers face in Part 2.
► Language level
Although the items are short, their level of grammatical complexity can vary considerably. You may also hear words and expressions you are unfamiliar with.
► Aural distractors
Incorrect answer choices may include words that sound the same as a word in the question or statement (e.g., fare and fair), or words that sound similar (e.g., report and thought). You may also hear the same word (e.g., hard), but with two different meanings (e.g., rigid and difficult). These traps are very easy to fall into if your mind wanders and you temporarily lose concentration.
► Variety
You never know what type of question you will hear next, or whether the item will start with a statement instead of a question. Occasionally, responses can be questions, too! This constant variety means that you have to think quickly the entire time.
► Pace
As there is no pause between responses, and only a short pause between items, you need to respond almost immediately. If you don't act decisively and mark your answer choices right away you can find yourself "falling behind" the recording.
IMPROVE YOUR PERFORMANCE
In this section you will practice ways to improve your score on Part 2 of the TOEIC® test.
These are the exercises you will cover:
Question Types recognizing Wh- questions, Yes/No questions, choice questions,
tag questions, negative questions, embedded questions, and
statements
Avoiding Errors identifying incorrect answer choices, and understanding why
they are incorrect
As you work through Improve Your Performance, try to identify any weaknesses you have, and focus on the areas you need to improve.
Question Types
In Part 2 of the TOEIC test, the majority of questions you hear begin with What, When, Where, Who, Whose, Why, Which, and How. Recognizing each type of Wh- question can help you identify the correct response, so it is especially important to pay attention to the beginning of each question.
Exercise A Listen to each Wh-question and write the first word you hear.
1. …………. 5. ………….
2. …………. 6. ………….
3. …………. 7. ………….
