JOURNEY THROUGH THE LAND OF
THE ASCENDING DRAGON

A journey through Vietnam is an unforgettable encounter with a land remarkable and unexpected unspoilt beauty. Arriving in Hanoi, the ancient capital of Thang long established by King Le Thai To in 1010 A.D, today’s political capital, is like stepping back in time. The last 50 years of this century seem to have passed it by.

Further afield, the provinces of the vast northern Red River Delta reflect the traditional agricultural culture on which the economy is based, in lush inundated rice fields, and ponds where mauve water hyacinth and lotus bloom in profusion. Beyond the plains, the cooler forested mountainous regions sire towards the western border with Laos and the northern border with China.

An overwhelming sense of the past pervades Hue, the old imperial capital of the Nguyen Dynasty who moved the capital to the center and rule the country from the beginning of the 1800s until 1945. The old citadel and Imperial Enclosure surrounding the Forbidden Purple City occupy the left bank of the Perfume River and the “new city” with its predominantly colonial architecture. The tombs of the Nguyen kings lie scattered on the hillsides, surrounding the south of the old city.

To the north and south of Hue, a chain of coastal provinces washed by the South China Sea, links the immense rice growing deltas of the Red and Mekong rivers. To the south lie the lands of the ancient kingdom of Champa, whose sanctuaries, temples and towers stand as a landscape of Central Vietnam. To the west the moutainous Tay Son region stretches across the country to the Central Highlands.

Ho Chi Minh City, outspoken and cosmopolitan, as far removed in character as in physical distance from the more reserved and traditional cities of Hanoi and Hue, lies in the heart of the South. The beaches of Vung Tau and Nha Trang to the north and the vast rice bowl of the Mekong Delta to the south offer some welcome respite from the constant flow of traffic and humanity of Vietnam’s most populous city.

It is impossible to come away from Vietnam untouched by its beauty, its richness, its poverty, its history and its people. Although the visitor will depart, the impressions and images of the journey will remain for a lifetime.
