The law has developed considerably since the end of the Second World War.The 1950s saw a dramatic rise in the number of claims and disputes involvingthe sea and technological advances together with changes in fishing methodsled to a realisation that there was a need for a clarification of the law. The ILCwas requested to work on producing a codification of the law of the sea andtheir work resulted in the subsequent emergence of four conventions governingmuch of the law. The four conventions marked the first successful occasion inwhich the ILC was involved in an attempt to codify an area of international law.Many of the conventions’ provisions reflected rules of customary internationallaw although some provisions represented a new development and thus did notbind non-parties. The four conventions were adopted at the first and secondGeneva Conferences on the Law of the Sea of 1958 and 1960 (UNCLOS I and II).The conventions were:
