The Yod, an unusual and uncommon as

The Yod, an unusual and uncommon astrological configuration, is an isoceles triangle formed by two planets sextile (sixty degrees from) each other and both quincunx (one-hundred-fifty degrees from) a third, Fulcrum planet. It is also called, “The Finger of God,” or "The Eye of God," or "The Finger of Fate" and presents a puzzle to the person who has it. Having a Yod in your chart means you have been chosen for some special purpose. This presents a heavenly puzzle, for you may not know what your special purpose is, and have to trust in fate that you will fulfill it, even if you never figure out what it is.

The fundamental force of the Yod is one of the five major aspects called the quincunx (which is also called an “inconjunction”). This is an angle of 150-degrees, one sign short of an opposition, and one sign past a trine. Being thirty degrees short of an opposition and thirty degrees too long to be a trine, the energy here doesn’t quite know what to do with itself, and can result in the subject feeling out of control from time to time. Or, it feels like things are beyond the subject’s control. The quincunx is a quirky, awkward aspect and uses up a lot of energy. All that energy has nowhere to go, if there are no meaningful aspects to any other celestial points. The Finger of God gives all that energy a purpose, a “place to go.” There is a fateful resonance to the quincunx, and it is said to be capricious and dangerous when involved in a transit; and quincunx transits are said to cause delay.

As mentioned above, when one planet is quincunx two other planets that are sextile each other, an elongated triangle called a Yod is formed. With a double quincunx, you can see why fate and a special purpose are involved in the analysis of the Yod. In keeping with the quirkiness of the quincunx, in some cases the subject may not ever figure out what this purpose is, and may fulfill it unbeknownst to her or himself! This is part of the experience of having a special purpose.

Part of the Yod dynamic is the Activation Point, the point directly opposite the Fulcrum, or Foot of the Yod. The Activation Point can be an impediment or an enhancement, depending on the overall configuration. For example, if Uranus is on the Activation Point, the soul's special purpose will be disrupted, and/or may be fulfilled spontaneously without warning. If Neptune is on the Activation Point, there will be deep awareness of, and desire for, fulfillment of some idealistic goal such as the desire to do something for all mankind. Author, Joan Kellogg, in her excellent book, The Yod: Its Esoteric Meaning, calls the interaction of the Yod Fulcrum with its Activation Point the "Axis of Awareness." The Yod is complex and difficult to delineate, but well worth the effort. It is the highest honor to assist the Yod bearer in his or her life journey and voyage of self-discovery.

Analysis of the Yod

The Yod is a tricky, but very rewarding formation to study because it offers so much potential insight for self-discovery and learning. I have found it helpful to isolate and enlarge it in a wheel all by itself to get a close look. After analyzing the basic interaction between the three planets and their signs, it is easier to study the house significance and proceed to analyze the dispositors, the Activation Point, and other planetary influences. Finally, any other aspects to the Yod planets provide additional clues.

Sample Subjects

Sister Ray has a Yod gold mine in her gifted and unusual family. My father, Russell Leroy Lawson, had a double Mercury and Mars Yod; my mother, Clara Victoria Lawson, had a Moon Yod; and two of my siblings have Sun Yods.

Russell Leroy Lawson

My late father’s achievements were many. He was an electronics wizard who did top-secret work for the U.S. Air Force after World War II. He served in three wars, WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. A lifelong ham radio operator, his radio station, K1MOU, was legendary for broadcasting with a “California Kilowatt.” He also built and invented radio equipment. He performed unusual, highly sensitive jobs in his career in the Air Force, and once received a personal commendation from President Truman. Although he had a distinguished career, his work was top secret, so all the family knew was that he worked with radios! His achievements were not limited to his work in the military and electronics fields. In the mid-1970’s, he agreed to undergo experimental surgery to treat a brand new disease, arterial sclerosis. In a ground-breaking procedure performed by Dr. Barbara Kinder of Yale-New Haven Hospital, my father received a replacement aorta that looked like a corrugated vacuum cleaner hose. Finally, he was part of Dr. Kenneth Ring’s University of Connecticut study of the NDE (Near-Death-Experience) after he had an NDE during his second aortal replacement (the first artificial aorta only lasted three years, when it became twisted and had to be replaced). So, you can see that my father had a fateful life filled with deeds that had far-reaching consequences. This brief biographical sketch gives you an idea of how someone with a double Yod would have the Finger of God pointed at him and would have a fateful life. Let’s look at the celestial particulars.

Double Yod from Mars and Mercury

The dominant Yod is from Mars in Aquarius to Venus in Cancer sextile Retrograde Mercury in Virgo. Mars is the sign of war; Aquarius is the sign of brotherhood and electronics. A career soldier (Mars) from America (Aquarius) becomes an electronics specialist (Aquarius again). Venus in Cancer tells us the wife (Venus) and home life (Cancer) will be involved. We moved from place to place, following my father around the country, and living in Germany during the early 60’s. My mother orchestrated all these moves. Retrograde Mercury in Virgo indicates discriminating communications and high intelligence, often operating in secret or behind the scenes. An electronics wizard builds his own radio station and invents new types of radio equipment, which is sometimes used in the service of his country. Although I know little about what my father actually did at his job, I know for certain that it was highly stressful, exacting and technical work that helped win three Wars and the Cold War. It is easy to see the hand of fate working here, especially when top-secret work in three wars was involved. Neptune is on the Yod's Activation Point, so his special purpose in life was partially obscured or hidden and involved a higher, universal power, as well as service to all mankind.

There is a second, subsidiary Yod that also involves Retrograde Mercury in Virgo quincunx Mars in Aquarius sextile Chiron in Aries. Mercury and Mars are both Fulcrum planets, and also working together in both Yods, through the airwaves (Mercury/Uranus) and the military (Mars in Aquarius is disposited by Uranus, which rules electricity and electronics). Uranus is located on the Activation Point of the subsidiary Yod, so the planet Uranus had a profound influence in Russell Lawson's life. Uranian-ruled activities were a dominant part of his life, both in his work for the U.S. Air Force, then in his work as a private citizen under the call-sign, K1MOU. The second Yod of Mercury in Virgo (discriminating intelligence and service of an intellectual nature) to Mars in Aquarius (his position in the military as a radio and communications expert) sextile Chiron in Aries adds a dimension of suffering to the equation. Chiron in Aries indicates militant suffering, suffering with a vengeance. And, suffer he did: The long, dangerous bomber flights during WWII; the flights in freezing reconnaissance planes with no food for 18 hours before and during the Korean War; the long separations from his family; two aortal bypasses; and finally, cancer. And, that is only the physical part. This man was touched by the hand of fate and acquitted himself with great dignity, bravery and brilliance. The men and women who fought in WWII are called the Greatest Generation. My father fought in three wars, not just WWII, a remarkable achievement all by itself. He was a remarkable man who achieved much in his brief life.

Clara Victoria Lawson

My late mother was remarkable, too. She and my father married after a short courtship, and were married for 36 years. Her greatest achievement was surviving four live, natural childbirths in five years. This was a dangerous feat, for obstetrics were not as advanced in the 1950’s as they are today. She bravely nurtured the family through cross-country and overseas moves, a plethora of illnesses, injuries and school changes every other year. A loving wife and mother, efficient administrator and a great cook, she was a warm, outgoing Aries who had great insight into what makes people tick. She always wanted to be a psychologist. After her children were grown, she became a very successful salesperson, earning the top figures in her district year after year. She was beloved by her family and her community. We cherished and loved her deeply. She and my father were fated to be together. What does her Yod reveal?
