Developing countries will have difficulty addressing many of the environmental issues facing
them while at the same time maintaining a viable economy, if they don't manage their land
resources and associated land related information in an efficient and effective manner. This
demands that they have an appreciation of the role of land and geographic information
systems in the management of cities, states and of the country.
This requires two important structures: first, an education system where the
complexities of the land related problems and the technologies associated with
LIS can be understood and taught. Second, institutional arrangements in
government which can provide the coordination and support for the adoption of the
concepts and associated technologies.
