BUSINESSES REPORT THAT a person’s ability to work collaboratively,
think critically, and solve problems is an important hiring
consideration. It has been noted that educational programs need to do
more to promote learning in these areas. Critical thinking competence
is best developed when the investigated problem does not have a
“right” answer and instead the answer must be discovered. The project
presented here uses an actual merger transaction as the basis for
two groups of adult undergraduate liberal arts students to research,
analyze, and develop consensus on the viability of merging. The project
involves two groups: One group acts as the transaction buyer and
the other group acts as the seller. Groups meet four times to evaluate
the viability of the transaction and eventually decide whether to
merge.
