The usual medium for inoculation of specimens is blood agar (preferably sheep blood). For most staphylococcal species, the inoculated plates are incubated aerobically at 35–37°C for 24 to 48 hours. On blood plates, abundant growth of staphylococci occurs usually within 18 to 24 hours.
