The gospel would be copied and given to each new congregation, and that congregation would, in turn, read the gospel, copy it, and pass it along to other congregations.
Some gospels (like Luke) may have been published regionally from the beginning, but all of them eventually gained a measure of acceptance within the region they were originally published and in the Empire as a whole.
As people became acquainted with each of the four gospels, they began to see them as a collective unit that needed to be preserved.
