In most karst environments, vegetation is an important component of the karstification process. As
mentioned earlier, pure limestone does not produce
abundant soil, and it is often the decay of vegetal litter
that helps build the soil. The soil helps provide
carbonic acid for the dissolution of the limestone,
thereby increasing the generation of karst. The disturbance or removal of vegetation, therefore, disrupts
the natural evolution of karst (Harding and Ford 1993;
James 1993). Vegetation also prevents soil erosion and
maintains the purity of the groundwater.
