In most karst environments, vegetation is an important component of the karstification process. Asmentioned earlier, pure limestone does not produceabundant soil, and it is often the decay of vegetal litterthat helps build the soil. The soil helps providecarbonic acid for the dissolution of the limestone, thereby increasing the generation of karst. The disturbance or removal of vegetation, therefore, disruptsthe natural evolution of karst (Harding and Ford 1993;James 1993). Vegetation also prevents soil erosion andmaintains the purity of the groundwater.
