Despite its lack of public awareness, Hyundai went on to sell an impressive 168,882 Excels during its first year of business in the United States. That mark still stands as a single-year sales record for a rookie import automaker.Since those humble beginnings Hyundai has established a U.S. production base and expanded its lineup to 13 nameplates.Although the Excel established Hyundai in the U.S. market, the Sonata is the company's best-seller overall. Of the company's 10 million sales, 2,498,203 units, or 24.98 percent, were of the Sonata. The Elantra is close behind with 2,484,788 sales, or 24.85 percent of the automaker's U.S. sales.The Santa Fe family is third on Hyundai's U.S. sales list with 1,244,934 sales.
