Temporal flexibilityAn important element is the “BMW time account”, whichgives employees the possibility to save or overdraw up to300 hours a year. At the same time, it gives the companymore leeway in case of market fluctuations. In addition, many BMW Group employees take advantageof flexible work time models such as part-time work or Full-Time Select (see Chapter 05.2). The partial retirement programmethat helps people master the transition from workto retirement is taken advantage of by 85 % to 90 % of allemployeesin the respective age group. In 2008 alone, theBMW Group concluded approximately 1,250 new partialretirementcontracts with employees. However, starting in2010, the additional amount of benefits presently paid bythe Federal Employment Office will be omitted. The BMWGroup will nevertheless continue its partial retirementprogrammeand adapt the existing company agreementbased on the collective agreement “Flexible Transitioninto Retirement”.In today’s very difficult economic climate, in which theusualflexibility activities are not sufficient, BMW AG alsoapplies the legal means of short-time work to safeguardemployment. This happened in the first half year of 2009when the Board of Management and the Works Councilagreed to counter the volume adjustments in productionwith short-time work at several German plants with thegoal of reducing costs as necessary while safeguardingemployment.
