The Bat Conservation Trust & Institute of Lighting Engineers have produced a review
of the impacts of lighting on bats (BCT / ILE, 2009). With respect to foraging bats,
some species are less affected by lighting, and will feed on insects attracted to the
lights; these include noctule (Nyctalus noctula), Leisler’s bat (Nyctalus leisleri),
serotine (Eptesicus serotinus) and pipistrelles (Pipistrellus spp.). Other species are
known to avoid well-lit areas; these include horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus spp.), longeared bats (Plecotus spp.), Myotis spp. bats (including whiskered, Natterer’s,
Daubenton’s & Bechstein’s bat), and barbastelle (Barbastellus barbastellus).
The BCT describe a range of negative impacts (actual and postulated) of lighting on
bats, including:
 Increased risk of predation by avian predators (e.g. normally diurnal raptors
foraging at night);
 Avoidance of lit areas causing barrier effects (e.g. observations on Daubenton’s
bats in urban river corridors (Fure, 2006)); and
 Depletion of insect prey density in dark areas due to their attraction to lighting
(especially lighting with a high UV component)
