Strum and more new this week

Strum… by ND Tank (NDTank) has wonderful simplicity, making it my favorite of this week’s tees. What I love is that although the artwork is very pared down, it’s intelligently done and maintains a lot of the quirks that make the instrument interesting. The strings subtly vary in size, and there’s a lovely soft wood texture on the guitar’s body. And of course, capturing the whole image within the shape of a guitar pick is brilliant, because it immediately draws you in and also speaks to how the object is used. Plus, how great does that triblend shirt look?

Golden Traveler by Evan Luza (ELU_) definitely feels like Fall, with an intrepid little fox making his way through the landscape as captured within the red and orange tones of an autumn leaf. A couple of choices make this design really effective- one is the way everything is at a bit of an angle, almost as though our fox is walking in a brisk wind. Another is the way the outline of the leaf isn’t completely firm, breaking off small bits alongs the edges. Both help the leaf to feel organic rather than manufactured by the artist, and create a sense of motion.

Corgi-naut by Phil Tseng (pilihp) may be the second corgi in outer space design I’ve seen, but it’s the first to make use of photography. What I like about the mix of photo and cartoon is that it makes it feel like you’re looking at what the corgi is imagining. Like maybe every time he does a big leap he’s dreaming of an ice cream spacewalk. There’s also a nice touch in having the ice cream affected by lack of gravity, and in keeping the corgi’s face (tongue and all) encased in the glass dome- it makes it clear that as cool as the concept of eating ice cream out in the milky way may be, trying to actually accomplish it would be quite a feat. And of course a corgi would know this, they’re smart dogs.

Hunting Season by dandingeroz (dandingeroz) makes a great first impression with its bold color palette. I like the way the color is handled, which each hill progressively gaining more “fall” color as it approaches the cabin. I think that’s a nice representation of the way autumn can sometimes seem like it’s creeping across the landscape, not there one day and then suddenly all around you the next. The use of that bright orange fox parked in front of the cabin and staring down the door is interesting as well, almost as though humans are the prey in the hunting season the shirt’s title refers to. He certainly doesn’t seem afraid of the inhabitants. But I like the idea that he’s just inviting his neighbors out of their dreary brown home and into nature so they can run around and play in all the colors like he does.

It’s Dangerous to Go Alone by Dan Elijah Fajardo (dandingeroz) is a gorgeous piece that takes you right into the depths of a vast forest, a lone hero about to face off against a massive enemy. What I love about this design is the quiet confidence of the hero, the glaring behemoth of a villain, and the way those realistic trees engulf the scene, swallowing the characters whole and projecting that they’re inside a truly massive forest. It’s the kind of theme that resonates strongly for all kinds of gamers, and folks who dig a good Robin Hood style story. So where I think the art takes a bit of an unnecessary turn is in using the outline of Link’s elfin face as a container for all the action. It distracts attention from the more interesting tale being told within, and makes the story more specific to Zelda than it needs to feel at first glance. Plus, Link’s head is just not that inspiring a shape- you can’t really see his distinctive hat, and his thin, droopy hair and sharp chin don’t look all that heroic

Corgi-naut by Phil Tseng (pilihp) may be the second corgi in outer space design I’ve seen, but it’s the first to make use of photography.
