Origin/Distribution
The cultivated form of cashew is held to have
originated in the restinga (low vegetation found
along the sandy coast along eastern Brazil) of
north-eastern Brazil. Anacardium occidentale is
also probably indigenous to the savannas of
Columbia, Venezuela and the Guianas (Mitchell
and Mori 1987). It is a also a dominant native in
the cerrados (savanna-like vegetation) of central
and Amazonian Brazil. The plant was introduced
into South America west of the Andes, Central
America, West Indies and then to the East by
early travellers. It is now found widely in the old
and new tropics around the world between latitudes 27oN and 28oS. Cashew is cultivated especially in coastal sandy areas. The main cashews
producers and exporters are India, Tanzania,
Mozambique, Angola and Vietnam.
