The differences between these stochastic images provide a direct usable visualization of the uncertainty about the reservoir rock and fluid properties. Where all the different outcomes agree, there is little or no uncertainty; where they differ most, there is maximum uncertainty.Stochastic images represent alternative, equiprobable numerical models of the reservoir rock and fluid properties, and they can be used as input to flow simulators for sensitivity analysis. To illustrate an application of the geo statistical concepts, porosity and permeability distributions for a reservoir were generated with fractal geostatistics based on the work of Hewett and Behrens.23 For this field, the interwell permeabilities were determined with a porosity vs. permeability correlation, and the porosity distributions were obtained from the geostatistics.24 Four different porosity/permeability representations were created by honoring any permeability barriers that existed. The resulting permeability distributions for this model are shown in Figure 5—11. The result of this procedure was to generate four different geologic models of varying complexities for this reservoir.
