The fi eld should be cleared of all stubble and plant residues of the previous crop. Un-decomposed plant residues promote growth of disease causing soil borne
fungi. For land preparation, ploughing to a depth of 15-20cm (very deep ploughing should
be avoided) and several passes of the harrow to obtain a fine tilth are required.
