dominate the mangrove plantations generally as monospecific stands. 15These species are medium quality timbers used for fuel wood,constructions and furniture. 16'17 About 80% by area of the earlyplantations consisted of monospecific stands of S. apetala, about 15%consisted of stands of A. officinalis with the remaining areas consistingof Excoecaria agallocha, Bruguiera spp. and Ceriops decandra, morevaluable species for timber or paper pulp production. Polybag cultureof a range of other mangrove species (Table 1) has been experimentallydeveloped although field assessments of the performance of thesespecies are as yet incomplete. ~a'~9
