Akamai’s Request Router (RR) performs a highly scalable, low-latency request routing function. Using enhanced Domain Name System (DNS)-based techniques, it translates host names from end-user requests into IP addresses of the edge caches best able to deliver the requested content. RR is also responsible for global and local load balancing at all levels of the CDN and, when applicable, for federation with Akamai’s Global Intelligent Platform. The RR combines server mapping and network topology information provided by the operator with load, latency and availability information provided by AHC nodes to direct client requests to the optimal CDN resource. The RR also provides DNS services for the URLs served by the CDN. With its scale out architecture, RR can be replicated and distributed throughout the network to assure maximum performance and fault tolerance. The RR is naturally extendible to support the use case of federation of interconnected CDNs, enabling Service Provider to engage in mutually beneficial peering arrangements. Examples of Federated CDNs include CDN termination, where Akamai’s global CDN can peer with Service Provider to terminate content delivery for Akamai’s global customers to SP’s locally connected end-users, or CDN peering via Akamai Federation, which would enable SP to deliver content to global end users connected to the Akamai Intelligent Platform.
