As such, despite being subject to criticisms from academics in relation to its negative effects on the children’s development and the parents’ wellbeing, some merits can be attributed to this teaching method.
First of all, scientific research has proved that students receiving regular parental support to complete their homework perform better than those who do not. Thus, home schooling is likely to accentuate this positive benefit. This can be explained by the fact that children are keener to learn when their parents show a constant interest in their educational pursuits. Parents are further better equipped to identify areas where their offspring are struggling, having brought them up from a young age. Hence, a tailored curriculum is likely to speed up their children’s learning process.
However, sacrifices from parents are paramount if they wish to reap the above-mentioned benefits. Those individuals at the bottom of the economic ladder are most likely to struggle to find the time and resources to educate their children at home. Being recipient of a poor level of schooling themselves, their teaching performance is most likely to pale as compared to that of qualified teachers who underwent rigorous training.
Moreover, home schooling is likely to deprive children of critical social skills from being in regular contact with their parents only. Indeed, these youngsters often possess a short friends list and may lack team work skills from solely completing individual school assignments. In a similar line, they are unable to gauge their academic performance against peers.
To conclude, home schooling is superior to traditional schools to some extent. Unfortunately, given the degree of group work demanded in most areas of society and the commitment required from parents, this method of education is impractical in most cases.
