n some subsurface gas reservoirs, at high temperatures, shorter-chainliquid hydrocarbons, primarily those with fve to seven carbon atoms inlength, occur as a gas. When the gas is produced, the temperature decreases, and the liquid hydrocarbons condense out of the gas on the surface. Thisliquid, called condensate, is almost pure gasoline, is clear to yellowish tobluish in color, and has 45 to 62 °API gravities. Condensate is commonlycalled casinghead gasoline, drip gasoline, white gas, or natural gasoline. It is oftenadded to crude oil in the feld in a process called spiking to decrease the °APIgravity and increase the volume and value of the oil. Condensate removedfrom natural gas in the feld is classifed as crude oil by regulatory agencies.
