These same principles apply in frictionless mechanics, where instead of a bend; a loop is placed in the wire. Bends placed on the mesial and distal legs of this loop are called the Alpha and Beta bends respectively. These bends produce the Alpha and Beta moments when the wire is engaged into the brackets. In frictionless mechanics, teeth are moved without the brackets sliding along the archwire. Retraction accomplished with these loops, is more controlled tooth movement than friction or sliding mechanics.
