HA NOI — HSBC plans to further expand its operations in Viet Nam to meet demand for the country’s impressive economic growth, said Chairman of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Ltd. Vincent Cheng.
He made the comments on Wednesday in Ha Noi at a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, saying that his first visit to Viet Nam was aimed at discussing the economic environment and business prospects in the country.
"This year HSBC will celebrate 135 years of operating in Sai Gon, now HCM City. We expect to continue our momentum in the country by targeting small and medium local enterprises," Cheng said.
He also met with Finance Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung and Ha Noi Mayor Nguyen Quoc Trieu, before leaving for HCM City to meet Mayor Le Thanh Hai yesterday to exchange views on business and co-operation with local partners in the country.
The same day, Cheng presented HSBC scholarships to underprivileged students at the National University and University of Economics in HCM City.
The HSBC Scholarship Programme was established in 1998 and so far 335 students have received the scholarships totaling US$80,000. HSBC would extend similar programmes to Ha Noi universities this year, he said.
HSBC also opened branches in Ha Noi and Can Tho earlier this year.
