Infiuent water quality was good and did not deteriorate markedly during the period
monitored. The nutrients carried into the ponds through water exchange at the pumping rates used therefore did not contribute greatly to the N and P budgets, except briefly
during the rainy season. The use of influent reservoirs for the L ponds further reduced these
levels, particularly for P inputs to LI ponds which had the greatest amount of presettlement.
The water leaving the ponds contained 35% of the N and 10% of the P discharged,
including 33-37% on drainage of the ponds for harvest. The capture and treatment of
drainage water thus presents a good opportunity to reduce nutrient discharge. Similarly,
the settlement of particulate and removal of dissolved nutrients through the use of settlement
ponds and biological filtration respectively may reduce these loading rates further (Phillips
et al. 1993). The use of effluent treatment techniques, indicated as appropriate by the
results of this study, will be discussed elsewhere.
