Andersen’s stories retold in Vietnam’s water puppetry
A play which fuses Hans Christian Andersen’s well-known fairy tales with Vietnam’s traditional form of water puppetry will be performed in France, starting on October 24.
The 60-minute play, taken to the European country under a project which was kicked off in 2013 by the Vietnam Puppetry Theater and the Interarts Riviera SA, will be staged in Lyon and Le Revest-les-Eaux from October 24 to November 8.
There will be two performances per day, featuring three popular fairy tales by the revered Danish author, namely “Den lille Havfrue” (The Little Mermaid), “Den grimme Ælling” (The Ugly Duckling), and “Den standhaftige Tinsoldat” (The Steadfast Tin Soldier).
The music is written by French composer Henry Torgue.
In late 2013, the play was performed at the Quai Branly Museum in Paris and warmly received by some 4,000 audience members, who enjoyed seeing popular French stories combined with the Vietnamese folk art.
“We all had to kneel during the show and executed very slow, sophisticated movements because the stage was a 50cm-deep lake, which is shallow compared to the usual one meter. The audience’s positive reactions were our greatest award,” director Nguyen Tien Dung said.
The spectacle was put on hold in 2014, as Jean-Luc Larguier, head of the Interarts Riviera SA, died of cancer. It was his wife, Chantal Larguier, who suggested reviving it.
“She said she will continue her husband’s project, and introduce the play annually to not only France but also other European countries,” Dung added.
