The referendum produced an overwhelming majority in favor of an accession
to Russia.64 Already one day after the referendum, the Supreme National
Council of Crimea declared the independence of Crimea and requested
the recognition of its independence by other states. Already before that
declaration, the Supreme Council of Crimea proclaimed that a declaration
of independence would be taken “with regard to the charter of the United
Nations and a whole range of other international documents” as well as
with view to the ICJ’s advisory opinion on Kosovo’s declaration of independence.65
The latter is referred to as an authority that such declarations
do not violate international law.
