Studies using a number of species reported a range of responses from no to partial inhibition of photosynthesis (KAY80051, PAL82598, TAY86653). In most cases, workers have observed a parallel reduction in both stomatal aperture and photosynthesis (ERK80207, GUN88517, PAL82598, SQU85432). In contrast, ethylene increased stomatal aperture and photosynthesis in corn (CLI89317). Ethephon-induced epinasty in tomato reduced light interception by 60% and the net carbon exchange rate by 35%. Physically elevating the leaves back to their original position restored the normal rate of photosynthesis (WOO89085). In general, most workers have concluded that ethylene does not have a direct effect on photosynthesis (BRA83480, W0089361, WOO89085).
