As technology advances, the proliferation of hi-tech devices such as computers and mobile phones has allowed emails and text messages to become the prevailing mediums of communication. Some people are, thus, afraid that the reliance on these new methods will impede, and eventually efface, our ability to write decently. However, the author believes such stance is not supported by well-grounded reasons.First of all, it should be clearly understood that emails and text messages are mere modern versions of papers and pens. Although these technologies are pervasive in modern communication, they hardly affected the nature of it. By adopting email and text messaging, writers only changed the length and format of letters, leaving their contents, purposes and conventions preserved. It should be seen that people nowadays still have to pay the same attention when participate in correspondence as they were before when letters were the primary choice of written communication. Additionally, as long as written communication remains an important part of our society, the skill of writing will still be cherished. A conversation is only considered successful when participants understand the same information as a result of the conversation. This requires the writer to carefully plan, tailor and devise his or her writing according to the message’s purpose and recipient. A good writer also possesses the ability to use grammar, punctuation, tone, wording and spelling precisely and appropriately. As one can see, it is the skill, rather than the form, of writing that matters most in effective communication. The arguments outlined above have apparently overturned the prominent consensus that writing skills will vanish sooner or later as a result of the increased use of text messaging and emails. It should be noted that the nature of written communication has not yet changed by modern technology. Additionally, one should be clear that the mean of communication is not the most vital part of a successful conversation.
