The International Electrotechnical Commission(IEC) is responsible for the global standards on thefield of electrical engineering.IEC publications dealing with the explosion protection of electrical devices and installations are developed by the Technical Committee TC31 and canbe seen as recommendations which are a basis foralmost all standards. Up until a few years ago, requirements for areas with potentially explosivegases have been stipulated in standard series60079 and for areas containing combustible dustsin series 61241. As numerous requirements aresimilar for both areas, the two standard series willbe combined in series IEC 60079. For some standards this step has already been taken, others willfollow.National regulations, however, may differ fromthese standards. Based on this, it is necessary toexamine the extent to which the IEC-standardsmay be applied in the different countries
