A distinction is made between reactive and additive flame retardants.Reactive flame retardants are reactive components chemically built into a polymer molecule. Additive flame retardants are incorporated into the polymer either prior to, during or (most frequently) following polymerization. There are three main families of flame-retardant chemicals (Troitzsch, 1990; Wolf & Kaul, 1992; Green, 1992; Touval, 1993;Pettigrew, 1993; Weil, 1993).
