The electrons in atoms other than hydrogen also occupy various energylevels. The maximum number of electrons that can occupy a givenshell depends on the shell number. For example, in any atom, the firstshell can hold a maximum of only two electrons, the second shell can holda maximum of eight electrons, the third shell can hold a maximum of 18electrons, and so forth. The maximum number of electrons that can occupyany particular shell is 2n2, where n is the shell number.
