Ethylene and other gases pass through stomates, the size of which are regulated by the turgor pressure in guard cells. Investigators concerned with photosynthesis and transpiration have measured the effect of ethylene on stomatal apertures. Workers have reported either no effect or a closure of stomates. No response was observed on stomates of kohlrabi, bean, pepper, sugar beet, cabbage, squash, and tobacco (AHA78658). Nonresponders also included tomato (BRA83480), pinto bean (MAD83569), carnations (MAY77591), corn (PAL72275), and seven other species (TAY86653). In contrast, closure of stomates has been observed in faba bean (TIS86053), soy bean (TAY88085), peanut, cotton, bean (TAY86653), tobacco (SQU85432), Jerusalem artichoke, sunflower, and sweet potato (PAL82598). As yet, ethylene-induced stomatal opening has not been reported.
