Organic EstersThe next class of synthetics is the organic esters. The two primary types used in compressors are dibasic acid and polyol. Dibasic acid lubricants are better known as diesters. Diesters were the most popular synthetic lubricants when synthetic lubricants first became common in compressor applications in the 1970’s and 1980’s. They have a number of desirable qualities for compressor applications. They have a stable viscosity over a wide temperature range, high film strength, good metal wetting characteristics and a low vapor pressure at high temperatures.
