Hoang was born in a small village in the North of Vietnam where farming is the main work of most people. His family moved to Sai Gon 25 years ago. Even though growing up as a city boy, Hoang's love for plants and agriculture still persists. As a graduate student in Environmental Horiculture Science at University of Florida, he is spending most of his time trying to understand the physiology of Ghost Orchid and to develop a procedure to propagate this precious and beautiful plant. "If I found a new orchid variety," Hoang told Huong, "I would name it after you.
Besides his passion for orchids, Hoang is a voracious reader. Unfortunately, he could not remember all. Therefore, he usually tells Huong, who rarely spends time on reading, about the story and she will remember it for him. ;) He usually jokes to Huong: " I wish that our child could read as much as I do and remember as well as you do."
If I have to say one sentence, Huong is my best friend ever. I mean, really, a best friend. When kid say best friend, they want to hang out forever!!!
Huong is a third year graduate student at Stanford University. She's studying neuroscience, specifically autism-related molecular mechanisms. As we are both in school at different universities, we have a long distance relationship and this is not fun, not at all.
Huong is simply one in a million. She is clever, thoughtful, and very supportive to me and everything I do. She cooks really well and her food imagination is endless. She has fun with new tastes, new dishes, and seeing how people enjoy her food. She can eat a new dish at the restaurant, memorize the taste for a moment, and be able to copy it the next day, tasting even better. As a family-oriented person, Huong really fills my need. Nevertheless, thing that make Huong one-in-a-million is not cooking good food but thoughtfulness and maturity. Huong is always there to give me the advices when I need it the most.
She is not just my future wife but also My Best Friend!!!
how did we got ENGAGED?
We didn't have a fancy proposal, but it was a moment we will never forget.
It was the last hour of US Labor Day (September 2nd 2012), after long day working together in Dr. Kane's lab. We walked home together in a full-moon night. We were so self-centered, that the world around us seemed to not exist.
I asked Huong simply "Would you like to cook for me forever?"
She immediately replied "Yeah, who else would I cook for."
"Then marry me!!!"
And I gave Huong the ring that was much bigger than her finger size. I bet she was surprised and happy. She didn't even say yes since we both knew what was going on.
***
For the rest of my days, the rings on our fingers will be a reminder
of how much we love each other .
