The pulverized parts of 15 indigenous plants were evaluated under laboratory conditions for their relative toxicities to maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais Mots. Maize grains (50 g) were treated with the plant powders at the rate of 0, 1, 5 and 10% by weight of maize grains and then infested with 10 adult weevils. The comparative effectiveness of each of the plant powders were assessed by counting weevil mortality at 1, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days post-treatment. Three spices namely, Uvaria afzelli, Eugenia aromatica and Aframomum melegueta were toxic to the maize weevil at all the treatment levels within 24 hours of powder application. At 1% treatment level, only two plant powders, namely, Piper umbellatum and E. aromatica gave 100% kill at 28 days after treatment. Toxicities of the plants were dosage dependent since four of the plants tested gave 100% protection against the maize weevil at 10% powder concentration after 28 days. The most effective plant materials were U. afzelli, Erythrophleum guineense, P. umbellatum and E. aromatica. Other plants tested which had moderate insecticidal activities include Hyptis sauvolens, Allium cepa and A. guineense.Up to 463 more results found for "Sitophilus zeamais Motsch
