Animation traditionally is done by hand-drawing or painting successive frames of anobject, each slightly different than the precedingframe. In computer animation, although thecomputer may be the one to draw the differentframes, in most cases the artist will draw thebeginning and ending frames and the computerwill produce the drawings between the first andthe last drawing. This is generally referred to ascomputer-assisted animation, because thecomputer is more of a helper than an originator.____ In full computer animation, complexmathematical formulas are used to produce thefinal sequence of pictures. These formulas operateon extensive databases of numbers that definethe objects in the pictures as they exist inmathematical space. The database consists ofendpoints, and color and intensity information.Highly trained professionals are needed toproduce such effects because animation thatobtains high degrees of realism involves computertechniques for three-dimensional transformation, shading, and curvatures.____ High-tech computer animation for filminvolves very expensive computer systems alongwith special color terminals or frame buffers. Theframe buffer is nothing more than a giant imagememory for viewing a single frame. It temporarilyholds the image for display on the screen.____ A camera can be used to film directly fromthe computer's display screen, but for the highestquality images possible, expensive film recordersare used. The computer computes the positionsand colors for the figures in the picture, andsends this information to the recorder, whichcaptures it on film. Sometimes, however, theimages are stored on a large magnetic disk beforebeing sent to the recorder. Oncethis process iscompleted, it is repeated for the next frame. Whenthe entire sequence has been recorded on thefilm, the film must be developed before theanimation can be viewed. If the entire sequencedoes not seem right, the motions must becorrected, recomputed, redisplayed, andrerecorded. This approach can be very expensiveand time consuming. Often, computer-animationcompanies first do motion tests with simplecomputer-generated line drawings before sellingtheir computers to the task of calculating thehigh-resolution, realistic-looking images.
