Firewall is a common network security facility used to isolate the SCADA systems and corporate network as well as Internet, but there is not enough information on exactly how to deploy, configure and manage it in industrial environment. Besides, traditional firewalls are designed for the Intranet segregated from Internet or outside networks and are unaware of the existence of industrial protocol such as Modbus/TCP or Industrial Ethernet/IP. In other words, they can not examine or filter SCADA packets at the application layer or offer proxy services for these protocols
