Pad/Strip foundation shall be adopted for lightly to medium loaded structures/equipment, .
For this type of structures/equipment, a 300mm well-compacted hardcore is required beneath
the footing (except for the areas in which the existing ground below the footing is
basalt/granite Rock)
The allowable settlement for the shallow foundation is 10mm for exchanger & horizontal
vessel, 15mm for pump & piperacks and 25mm for compressor/turbine, buildings.
The allowable bearing pressure calculations of rigid shallow foundations are presented in
Appendix E. In the calculation, the settlement is only caused by loading on the new ground
(after filling to the new design level). However, in some areas the existing ground surface are
below the new ground surface then it shall be filled to the new design level by the selected
material. Obviously, the site grading must lead to the settlement of current ground and the
filled layer itself.
As a result, it is recommended to finish the site grading at least 2 or 3 years before the
construction of foundation (footing). Otherwise, the residual settlement caused by site grading
to design level must be taken into account.
The allowable bearing pressure of soil for different footing sizes with foundation depth
of approximately 1.5m below site grading level are as shown in Appendix
