Excessive barrel residence time—the time that the plastic material remains in the heated barrel before it is injected into themold is the residence time. If the shot size is less than 20% ofthe barrel capacity, degradation of the plastic eventuallyoccurs. This degradation causes a darkening of light-coloredmaterials and a graying effect on dark materials. The shot-tobarrel ratio is optimized by moving the mold to a press inwhich the shot size is closer to 50%.
