12.5 A Fictitious Project Example
Consider the project network example in Fig.12.11. Each activity has an estimated
duration as denoted above each node in Fig.12.11, with a corresponding budgeted
cost denoted below the node. Activities 1 and 12 are dummies and are used to denote
the start and end of the project (with a zero duration and a zero cost). A schedule is
defined by a vector of start times, which implies a vector of finish times, as given in
the Gantt chart of Fig.12.12. This figure displays the baseline earliest start schedule
with a total planned duration PD equal to 16. The budget at completion (BAC) is the
sum of the individual activity costs, which is equals toe456.
In order to show the detailed calculations of all forecasting measures, it is
assumed that the project execution is known and finishes with a two-periods delay as
displayed in Fig.12.13. This figure displays the (fictitious) real life execution (actual
values for each activity duration and the corresponding actual costs) of all project
activities with a real project duration RD equal to 18. The final (real) total project
cost amounts toe643, which is higher than the BAC value due to the activity delays
(see Table12.4for detailed calculations). The project tracking process assumes a
reporting period per time unit, from ADD1,2,...,18.
