1.1 Workspace
The work area in InDesign CS6 includes the Menu bar, Application bar, Tools panel, Control panel, document window, and pasteboard. The arrangement of these elements in the work area is called workspace.
1.1.1 Menu Bar
The Menu bar displays various menus through which commands can be given. The menus included in the Menu bar and their description can be seen in Table 1.1.
Menus
Description
File
This menu opens, creates, saves, closes, exports, and sets up documents and books. Text and graphics can be imported and placed in a document. Using this menu, one can also print documents.
Edit
Predominantly, this menu is used to undo the previous commands. In addition, it is also used to cut, copy, paste, and edit objects. It allows spell check, performing search, and replacing operations. One can also set preferences from this menu.
Layout
This menu includes commands used to add, delete, rearrange, and navigate pages. Using this menu, one can change margins and guides, setup page numbers and sections, and create table of contents. This menu can also be used to resize a page and its objects.
Type
This menu includes commands used to modify text. Using this menu, one can insert special characters, break characters, white spaces, and placeholder text.
Menus
Description
Object
This menu is used to transform objects and frames surrounding text or graphic. Objects can be selected and arranged in a particular order. One can also apply multimedia effects to objects, edit path and shape, and control the display performance.
Table
This menu is used to insert and modify tables in a document.
View
This menu is used to change the magnification of a document for viewing purposes and show or hide grids, guides, and rulers. It is also used to show or hide the Story Editor options.
Window
This menu is used to arrange the currently opened documents as New Window, Tile, or Cascade view. One can show or hide different panels and toolbox using this menu as well as setup and work with workspaces.
Help
This menu gives all the information regarding the software.
1.1.2 Application Bar

The Application bar contains controls for changing the workspace and window arrangement, changing window magnification, launching Adobe Bridge, and searching Adobe’s online InDesign help.
1.1.3 Control Panel
This panel displays controls according to the objects or elements selected in the work area. They are as follows:
3⁄4 If an object is selected; all the transform controls such as move, rotate, skew, and scale are displayed on the
Control panel. Refer to Figure 1.1.
