Ethylene-induced respiration has also been noted in nonripening tissues such as potatoes (BUR52154, THE82031) (see Figure 5.1.). Surveys on the effect of ethylene on the respiration of various tissues have shown increases, decreases, or no response (THE82031, TER83255). Plants generate ATP by both the cytochrome and the alternative respiratory pathways. Several studies support the idea that ethylene-increased respiration is due to the induction of the alternative pathway. An increase in the alternative pathway has been reported in pea seedlings (DUN87044), cocklebur seeds (ESA87141), potato tubers (GUD85057), fruits (RAK88559, THE78249), leaves (SIS73068), and flowers (YIP89365).
