Technological resources are heterogeneous (Hunt and Morgan1995) and different functional areas of the firm have differenttechnological requirements (Coombs et al. 1998). Technology isoften directly beneficial to the firm in that its value is determinedby the degree to which it is utilized, and/or the extent towhich different types are used (Barney 1991). Thus, boundaryspanningtechnologies of the firm comprise a construct that maybe termed as Relational Technology Intensity (RTI). In thisstudy, RTI is defined as an operand resource consisting of thenumber of technologies employed by the firm to enable interinter-faceswithin and between businesses, and the degree to whichthose technologies are employed by the firm (including thebreadth and/or frequency of use of the technology). A firmmight have high RTI if all of its employees regularly utilize afew technologies, if all of its employees occasionally utilize awide range of technologies, and/or if different groups of itsemployees each regularly employ a single, group-specific technology.
