Australia's FMG receives approval for North Star iron ore project

Iron ore capacity expansion has continued in Australia yet, even after the main producers had completed a number of major projects by the middle of the year. Australia's third largest iron ore producer Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) has received approval for the North Star iron ore project from the Western Australian Environmental Protection Agency.
Full capacity of the project will be up to 15 million tpy of magnetite concentrate. The mine lifetime is 45 years. According to the preliminary information Metal Expert obtained, mining operation will start in H1 2015, with an initial capacity of 1.5 million tpy.
FMG fully owns two subdivisions – Chichester Hub (Cloudbreak and Christmas Creek sites with a total capacity of 90 million tpy) and Solomon Hub (Firetail and Kings with a total capacity of 60 million tpy).
Other major Australian iron ore producers, like BHP Billiton, have not yet announced their expansion plans. A substantial production increase in Australia seen late lest year and early this year led to a price slump in the Chinese market.
