Transgenic plants have also been considered as an alternative source of omega-3 fattyacids. Robert et al. (2005) were able to express a set of genes related to the elongation anddesaturation of fatty acids in Arabidopsis thaliana. The expression of these genes resulted in thesynthesis of EPA and DHA, which were found in the seed oils (Robert et al., 2005). In anotherstudy, researchers were also able to express EPA in Arabidopsis thaliana. They used a set ofelongation and desaturation genes from three different species (Isochrysis galbana, Euglenagracilis, and Mortierella alpina) to transform Arabidopsis thaliana. In this case the fatty acidswere expressed in the leaves of the plant (Qi et al., 2004).
