PREVIEW: MANCHESTER UNITED V STOKE CITY

How can I follow the game? The match at Old Trafford kicks off at 12:00 BST on Sunday and will be broadcast live in the UK on BT Sport. Set the scene for me… An impressive 4-1 victory over Leicester City was much needed following a tough run of results; a win that was cemented with a solid three points against Zorya Luhansk in the Europa League. The likes of Ander Herrera, Marcus Rashford and Zlatan Ibrahimovic have all put in a number of impressive displays of late, something that the team will be hoping to continue against Mark Hughes’s Stoke outfit who have had a dismal start to the campaign. The Potters currently lie in a lowly 19th place, with their only points coming from 1-1 draws against West Brom and Middlesbrough.

How have they started the season? It’s not been great for Hughes’s men, who have lost all but two of their six league games. The absence of their Player-of-the-Year goalkeeper Jack Butland and an unsettled back four has allowed uncertainly to creep into the mind-set of the Stoke rearguard. Indeed, the Potters have failed to keep a clean sheet since the England stopper was ruled out for a lengthy period in March. Stoke do, however, have a strong Premier League pedigree with players well versed to dealing with the pressures of England’s elite division. With that in mind, Hughes will be looking to the likes of former Red Ryan Shawcross, Marko Arnautovic and Wilfried Bony to pull them out of the mire.

Who’ll play for United on Sunday? Jose Mourinho rested a number of players for the clash with Zorya Luhansk on Thursday. Ander Herrera did not feature so is expected to be involved, and the same could be said of Daley Blind who could also play a part on Sunday following his three assists against Leicester last week. Recent injury victims Luke Shaw and Henrikh Mkhitaryan are also edging closer to a return but Phil Jones remains sidelined.

We’re no stranger to their manager, right? Indeed. As well as visiting Old Trafford as an opposition manager with Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, Fulham, QPR and Stoke, Mark Hughes was once the hero of the Stretford End. The Welshman enjoyed two spells at the club between 1980 and 1995, scoring an eye-catching 163 goals. “I was so proud to be part of such a fabulous era, one that has gone down as one of the golden periods in the distinguished history of the club,” Hughes once commented.

Anything else I should know? United have an imperious home record over the Potters stretching back 40 years. In fact, since Stoke's promotion to the Premier League in 2008, United have won every game at Old Trafford against the men from Staffordshire, scoring 25 goals in the process. Reds skipper Wayne Rooney bagged four of those and is United's top goalscorer in matches against Stoke from players currently at the club. The highest is Denis Law, who scored eight goals in 17 appearances against the Potters.
