Cruises are sometimes accused of being not very sustainable, and having some negative impact on their ports of call. As well as some water pollution, they are accused of having little contact with the local community and not contributing enough to the local economy because they often stay only a few hours and cruises do not use local accommodation because of sleeping on the ship. On the other hand, cruise passengers also spend significant amounts of money on taxis and souvenirs in ports of call.– Many cruise companies do keep down their costs by registering their ships in so-called ‘flags of convenience’ ports, with allegedly less rigorous safety requirements for ships.
